Timbermen host first-place Monarchs

The Peterborough Timbermen are looking to make it two wins in a row when they host the first-place Toronto Monarchs tonight at Children’s Arena in Oshawa at 8 p.m.

The Monarchs (4-1) lead the ALL with eight points. Peterborough (3-3), Oshawa, Whitby and Paris are all tied for second place with six.

The Timbermen and Monarchs are both coming off wins over the St. Catharines Shockwave. Last Friday the Monarchs defeated the Shockwave 16-11 while the Timbermen eked out a close 13-12 win on Saturday.

The Timbermen are led by Mark Vradenburg’s 29 points (6G/23A), while the Monarchs are led by Jordan Dance’s 31 (14G/17A). Jordan Critch leads Toronto with 17 goals.

Last week’s game was a sloppy win, so the Timbermen are looking to clean up their play and take fewer penalties.

“At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter who we play,” said Timbermen forward Fred Hartley. “We want to come back with every game as a new game. It doesn’t matter what we did last week or the week before. We just want to play our systems and stop taking penalties.”

The Timbermen were the most penalized team in the league in 2017 but their overhauled roster has resulted in much smarter play. Last Saturday’s high penalty count (eight minors for 16 minutes) was an anomaly so far in this season. But with first place is on the line, it wouldn’t be surprising for both teams to toe an emotional line.
