The Peterborough Timbermen rebounded well from a disappointing home opener loss last week with a 14-11 win over the defending ALL champion St. Catharines ShockWave on Sunday afternoon at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena.

Aaron Woods led the attack with a sock trick (six goals) and two assists. Newly acquired Skkylar Thomas scored once while assisting on nine goals. Returning forward Ty Thompson, in his first game of the season, scored four times.

“It was a challenge playing the defending champions and we played the game short six starters and missing goalie Landon Kells who was in Calgary with the Roughnecks,” said head coach and general manager Joe Sullivan.

The ShockWave got off to a quick start and jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the timbermen could get their feet under them. The game was back and forth with the defending champions maintaining the lead until the third quarter when the Timbermen came alive and outscored them 4-1 to take the lead.

Troi Benedict made 46 saves in his first game between the pipes for the Timbermen.

Thomas, acquired from the Toronto Monarchs for Leland Powless, Tyler Gaulton, and two draft picks, was the first star of the game.

“We lost a lot of great talent but gained youth in Skkylar who played Toronto Beaches Jr. A last summer,” Sullivan explained. “We needed to support our left side after losing star forward and captain Mark Vradenburg. Skkylar did not disappoint and he is young so our hope is we have him for a few seasons until the NLL gives him his opportunity.”

Vradenburg was lost for the season after tearing his ACL in the home opener.

Layne Smith scored eight of the ShockWave’s 11 goals.

Peterborough plays at Children’s Arena next week against the Whitby Steelhawks at 3 p.m. before returning home to Millbrook Arena on Saturday, January 25th to host the Six Nations Snipers at 3 p.m.

Scoring for the Timbermen:
Aaron Woods (6-2)
Ty Thompson (4-1)
Skkylar Thomas (1-9)
Davis Prince (1-1)
Joe Hall (1-1)
Todd Chapman (1-0)
Cameron Simpson (0-2)
Zack Thompson (0-1)
Brett Coons (0-1)
Mitchell Geoffroy (0-1)

  1. #7 Woods is the real deal. A gifted snipper. If he keeps this 5 points a game pace up. He will be in NLL soon.
    Cheers,
