Timbermen drop two games on weekend

The Peterborough Timbermen dropped both games they played this weekend, falling 17-13 Friday night at Millbrook Arena to the Ohsweken Bears, and then 15-11 on Sunday to the Six Nations Snipers at Iroquois Lacrosse Arena.

It was a difficult pill to swallow, especially after the Timbermen were coming off the high of their first win of the season in their last game, a 10-8 win over Paris.

Friday, an unexpected snowstorm popped up affecting the visiting Bears, who were only able to floor a team with 11 runners. Regardless, they brought enough heat to build up a 7-2 lead after the first quarter.

It was 5-0 before Bryce Dennis bounced a shot in to get Peterborough on the board. Ben Doherty followed that up with a transition break goal.

Ohsweken upped the lead to 10-2 in the second before Peterborough strung together four goals in 1:20 from Parker Sands, Keegan White, and another each from Dennis and Doherty.

Braeden Smith and Cole Hanrahan, with a pair, scored in the third quarter. Peterborough was determinedly chipped away at the lead throughout the rest of the game, scoring four more in the fourth including Dennis’ hat trick goal, but ran out of time.

“Offensively, we picked it up and that’s what we’ve been struggling with,” said Dennis, “but we might as well keep rolling.”

Dennis scored a fourth goal on the weekend on Sunday’s game and says he’s now now used to playing a new role on this team.

“I was always an offensive guy and then I came here a few games ago and switched over to defense/transition and I’m liking it, I think I’ll probably stick with it,” he said. “My lungs are there to stay on offense a little more and get loose balls and stuff.”

Sunday, the result was much the same, although it was the Timbermen shorthanded with just 15 runners. Peterborough trailed 12-4 going into the fourth, and outscored Six Nations 7-3 in the period, but just ran out of time to complete a comeback.

Koichi Nakamura, Jack MacAlpine, Matt Brenzel and Doherty each had a pair of goals in Sunday’s game.

Ryan Masters played very well in goal, getting the start on and coming in Friday in relief of Ethan Woods.

The Timbermen have only two games remaining in the regular season. They are back at home at Millbrook Arena this coming Saturday, March 18 at 2 p.m. to host the Oshawa Outlaws. Tickets will be sold at the door.

The Timbermen’s regular season comes to a close on the road on Sunday, March 26 vs the Paris RiverWolves at 2 p.m. at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena.

Playoff dates are to be announced.
