No Sunday Funday for Timbermen

The Peterborough Timbermen lost for the first time in five games on Sunday, falling 21-16 to the Paris River Wolves (6-1) at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena. The loss moves the Timbermen to 5-3 with six games remaining in the regular season, where they still sit in third place.

Six minutes into the game, the Timbermen led 5-3, but Luke Van Schepen kicked off a run of eight-straight goals for Paris, a run that lasted from the 8:38 mark of the first to the 5:12 mark of the second – an period of 18:26. Austin Murphy finally broke through for Peterborough but by then it was 11-5 Paris. The first half ended 13-6.

The biggest run the Timbermen could manage was three goals in a row in the third. Any comeback attempt was stifled.

Captain Brine Rice led the offense with five goals and a pair of assists. Cole Hanrahan, Austin Murphy and Skkylar Thomas each scored a pair of goals to help the effort. The Timbermen were in tough in goal with both Ethan Woods (school) and Thomas Kiazyk (NLL) unavailable. Backup Marko Celic did everything he could, playing the full 60 minutes.

Luke Robinson led the RiverWolves with five goals and a pair of assists. Chase Cosgrove got the win in goal.

The Timbermen head to Children’s Arena in Oshawa on next Saturday at 1 p.m. for a date with the first-place Whitby Steelhawks, before returning home to Millbrook Arena on Saturday, February 17 when they host the Oshawa Outlaws at 2 p.m.

NOTES: Earlier this week, transition specialist Jake Gasperetti was signed to the New York Riptide’s practice roster. Also, with an injury to Randy Staats, Aaron Woods was called up to the Halifax Thunderbirds’ active roster and made his NLL debut on Friday night in a 15-14 win over the Philadelphia Wings. Woods contributed a pair of goals and four assists.
